Civitavecchia is among the most important Italian passenger ports. The maritime connections have been increased by the recent "motorways of the sea" project that was designed to increase sea travel around the Mediterranea.  From Civitavecchia it is possible to reach Sardinia and Sicily by ferry. The port was built under the Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD.
