May festivals in Cordoba with NetFerry

May is the perfect month to explore the beautiful region of Andalusia in southern Spain. In today's blog, NetFerry lets you in on the parties and events taking place in Cordoba during the warm month of May! Cordoba lies in the Spanish hinterland, in the region of Andalusia. It’s a destination much loved by tourists, despite not being on the coast and has always attracted many tourists and travellers in search of Spanish towns with an authentic Moorish character.

There is some great architecture in Cordoba, the Arab-Christian Mezquita, the Royal Palace, the Roman bridge, medina, ancient watchtower tower, Torre de la Calahorra and the Jewish quarter with its fabulous synagogue.

In May the events and festivals really get going and provide the city with an even more interesting atmosphere and all the balconies in the streets in the old town are full of beautiful flowers and scents. This arrival of spring is marked by la Batalla de las Flores. A parade with floats decorated with fragrant and colourful flowers along the Paseo Della Victoria, paying homage to the new season. Women on the floats dressed in traditional costumes throw carnations out the crowds in celebration, and the spectators respond by throwing flowers back in a battle of colours and fragrance.

In the first days of May, a very heartfelt event known as Concurso Popular de Cruces is celebrated in Cordoba. The origins of this anniversary date back to pre-Christian times; and traditionally dedicated to nature and rebirth at springtime. Then, a wooden trunk embellished and adorned with flowers was introduced to the festivities, which, with the spread of Christianity, was turned into a cross. Today, local people decorate their patios with ornate crosses and the most beautiful patio is awarded.

Another great event is the Festival de Los Patios, evident on balconies and on patios all over the city, which become full of plants and flowers, colours and scents and many people open their gardens for people to visit. For example, the Palacio de Viana, one of the most important royal residences in Andalusia, open their courtyards which are bursting with colourful flowers at this time of year.

The month of May ends with the Feria de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, a massive religious celebration, which involves lots of fun and dancing! This party takes place in el Arenal, where there is a week-long programme of flamenco music, parades in traditional costumes and plenty of traditional food.
