Netferry explores Copenhagen: home to the world's oldest operating amusement park

Here is a fact for you; the world’s oldest operating amusement park is located just outside of Copenhagen. It is called Dyrehavsbakken, which means the Deer Pasture's Hill, although the locals refer to it as Bakken. As a roller coaster enthusiast, I just had to do a pilgrimage here!

The park is set in a forest area, around 10km north of Copenhagen and it became a popular place to visit thanks to the spring waters that were found in the area. The water was said to have health-giving properties so locals flocked here from Copenhagen and opened its doors to the public in 1583. Today, the amusement park has around 2.5–2.7 million visitors per year.

To get to the Dyrehavsbakken Amusement Park, just take a 30-minute train from Copenhagen Central Station, where trains leave for Klampenborg station every 15 mins, then from the station, you can walk to the entrance of the park. The park works with a coupon system, so there is no entrance fee, you just pay for what you ride on. There are a range of rides to suit the whole family, but the most loved ride has to be Rutschebanen, the traditional wooden rollercoaster that was built in 1932. Aside from this one, there are 5 other steel coasters, which you will be happy to know have been built in the past three decades! Then there are also plenty of other classic rides such as the teacups, bumper cars, a ghost train and a log flume to entertain everyone!

If you prefer to stay in Copenhagen but you still want to visit an amusement park, then you have to go to Tivoli Gardens, this is Demarks number one visitor attraction!  It is also quite historic and opened its doors in 1843, it is, in fact, the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, today it receives over 4.5 million visitors per year. It is located right in the centre of town, so it's super easy to get to.

Unfortunately, you have to pay to get into Tivoli Gardens, for adults its 200 DKK and for children aged 3-7 then it’s 100 DKK, then once you are inside you have to pay for each individual ride.  There is also an old wooden coaster at this park, its called Rutschebanen and was built in 1914. There are three other modern steel coasters as well as lots of other rides.
