What to eat in Albania - Netferry recommends

From the stunning mountains to the coast, Albania is full of unexpected culinary surprises. The landscape is as varied as the cuisine, which is composed of meats like lamb and veal, plenty of veggies, as well as excellent seafood from the Ionian Sea. Aside from the food, Albania is a great place for a holiday because there is plenty of history and culture to explore, without having to give up your lazy days on sandy beaches.

Now let Netferry help you discover the tasty side of Albania! Firstly on the menu is Fërgesë me mëlci, a deep red stew composed of red tomatoes, red peppers, onion, ricotta and chicken livers. It is cooked slowly in the oven in terracotta dishes and served up with some crusty bread for dipping.

For meat lovers, there is plenty of lamb and veal in Albania. One particularly delicious lamb dish is Tavë Kosi, which is also served in terracotta dishes. The lamb is covered with egg and yoghurt and then baked together like a quiche. Sinking your fork into the fluffy dish is a joy!

You can’t leave Albania without trying the delicious Qofte meatballs because they are one of Albania’s national dishes and represent the Ottoman influence on the cuisine. They can be found in all parts of Albania and there are many different versions of the recipe that sometimes includes mint or feta cheese.

Speca me gjizë is a great dish that is also suitable for vegetarians! It is really colourful because it's made with yellow, orange, green, and red peppers stuffed with rice, cottage cheese, and spices before being baked in the oven. There are plenty of veggie options in Albania because the vegetables are so tasty and fresh.

Finally, for dessert, why not try a piece of trilece cake, a sponge cake soaked in milk and cream and covered with a sweet caramel layer. It is very sweet... so be warned!  Another pudding with Ottoman roots and based on various cereals is Ashura (pronounced ashure), otherwise known as Noah's pudding. It is a Turkish dessert of Armenian origin and is known as the oldest desert in the world, legend has it that it was actually Noah who made this pudding first - hence the name. It is similar to rice pudding - warm and comforting.
