What to eat in Sicily: on the road from Palermo to San Vito Lo Capo
If you sail into Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily with Netferry, why not take a trip along the coast to the far western tip of Sicily and the gorgeous town of San Vito Lo Capo. Not only are there are plenty of restaurants to try some typical Sicilian dishes along the way, but San Vito Lo Capo is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, as pictured above. Here at Netferry we know good food, so here are a few recommendations and tips from us!
Beginning in Palermo, in a small street in the city centre, there is a lovely little restaurant called the Carizzi d’Amuri. The restaurant interior is elegant with high ceilings and three brothers opened the restaurant because of their passion for good food and hospitality. The menu is mainly based on fish and Netferry recommends the courgette and prawn tagliatelle from Mazara, it is an exceptional dish. A real triumph of taste and colour with the green courgette cut into strips in contrast with the soft pink prawns. And this is just for the starter, or primi as it is known in Italy.
Next travel along the coast to Erice, to do a spot of shopping and once you have shopped until you’ve dropped, pop into the Grammatico Bar and have a coffee and traditional Sicilian cannoli, a cylindrical biscuit stuffed with sweetened ricotta. There are all kinds of other pastries here too, so pick whatever you fancy, they are all hand made and the shop is run by Signora Maria, the guardian of many ancient recipes for Sicilian sweets. She is said to have learned from the expert hands of the local nuns. Many sweets in Sicily have flavours that combine almond, cinnamon, pistachio, and ricotta. If you go for a second treat, then don't miss tasting the ricotta-filled Genovese, it is sensational!
Continuing west, you will eventually reach San Vito Lo Capo on the far western peninsula, where there are more great places to eat. La Cambusa showcases the island's fantastic fish and pleases everyone because it is also a pizzeria and grill where you can sit outside or inside. At La Cambusa we recommend the roasted fish - you can't go wrong!
If you want to try delicious dishes influenced Maghrebin cuisine then don't miss Trattoria du Lantirnieri. It is set in a lovely interior courtyard and the homemade dishes are embellished with a touch of Arabic flavour. In San Vito Lo Capo, the best arancini in town are said to be found at L’uomo Ragno, they have various flavours – we recommend you try them all!
