Alexandroupoli is in the region of Thrace, on mainland Greece. The city has always been an important hub for the exchange of goods due to its geographical location, it lies to the east of Thessaloniki and quite close to Turkey.

A brief history of Alexandroupoli

The name Alexandroupoli echoes the city's glorious ancient Greek past. Alexandroupolis was the setting for numerous fierce battles and has witnessed many historical events. It was Alexander the Great who named the city when he decided to occupy the Maedi capital of Macedonia. He occupied the territory and threw out all of the people who lived there, then repopulated it with people from various disparate countries.

Alexandroupolis is a very hospitable city because it has always been a crossroads for people and culture. In 1800 the Ottomans introduced a railway network linking Istanbul and Vienna, the railway station is located near Alexandroupolis, in the village Dede-Agats.

What to see in Alexandroupoli

The lighthouse in the port of Alexandroupoli was built in 1880 and is the symbol for the city. During your stay in Alexandroupolis, there are many museums to discover, including the Ethnographic Museum and the Natural History Museum. The city is surrounded by wonderful, enchanting mountains to explore, you can discover ruins of ancient castles and amazing canyons and caves. Legend has it that the cave of the Polyphemus cyclops is close to Alexandroupoli!

The beaches here are beautiful, uncrowded and full of fragrant vegetation. Less than a kilometre from the city centre there is Dimotiki Plaz Alexandroupolis beach, with crystal clear waters and all the necessary services for a day at the beach.
