Greece is located in southern Europe, at the south of the Balkan peninsula. Greece is the birthplace of Western civilization and modern Greek culture can be traced back to ancient times.

The Olympic Games, Western philosophy, democracy were all born in Greece, along with medicine, theater, maths and geometry. Its most important cities are Thessaloniki and the capital, Athens. Greek culture has influenced Western culture mostly through literature with books such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

Greece is in the top 20 most visited destinations in the world and tourists flock here for the historical, cultural and natural beauty. The top destinations in Greece include Crete, Rhodes and Corfu, but there are also lesser-known gems to discover in Greece, where you can be surrounded by the beauty of nature. In addition to the beach, Greece offers fantastic museums, archaeological sites and monuments dating back to the Mycenaean, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine times. 

Greek Food

Hellenic cuisine boasts centuries of gastronomic tradition and Greek dishes are varied and rich. Fish is widely eaten along the coast and in the islands, while inland, mutton, lamb and pork are preferred. The most famous dishes include the famous Moussaka, Stifado Stew, Tyropita, and Gyros in warm pitta bread. Greek salad is an unmissable dish consisting of tomato, onion, black olives, feta cheese and oregano, but another dish is Spanakopita, a type of spinach and cheese pasty. Also be sure to try peppers and tomatoes stuffed with mincemeat rice and spices, known as Ghemistà! Souvlaki are barbecued skewers of pork meat, which are also delicious. Skordalia is a dish containing mashed potatoes with walnuts, almonds, garlic and olive oil.  Tzatziki is a wonderful vegetarian dip made from yogurt, cucumber, aniseed, garlic and olive oil. Be sure to try vine leaves stuffed with rice, called Dolmades. And of course do not miss out on the feta cheese, grilled octopus, Kalamata olives and world famous olive oil.  In the mountainous regions spit-roasted lamb entrails, sausages and even different types of grilled meat are eaten. For those with a sweet tooth, the most popular desserts are Galaktoboureko, made with milk, eggs, sugar and filo pastry, traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, Vassilopita, Baklava and Kadaifi.
