Guide of Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa is considered the gateway to northern Greece and this city hosts one of the main ports on the Adriatic route, but it is more than just a stopover, it also has some beautiful places to discover.

History

Located in the region of Epirus, it was formerly known as the Titans. It was a large and important centre during the classical era but with the arrival of the Romans, it was destroyed.  Over the centuries the city has always been in a cycle of destruction and reconstruction.

Places to Visit

The historic centre doesn't have many historic buildings due to destruction in the Second World War, but there is an archaeological museum home to artefacts from the Paleolithic to the Ottoman era. There are also some archaeological excavations on the outskirts of the city. The Castle of Igoumenitsa is located on a hill and was built during Venetian rule, lit was later partly destroyed during the battles with the Turks but is a beautiful place to visit today and is surrounded by a pine forest.

Beaches

The Gulf of Igoumenitsa has beautiful sandy coves where the clear sea invites you to cool down. Drepano also has nice beaches and is located five kilometres from the city. It is a seven-kilometre-long sandy stretch and surrounded by low eucalyptus plants, there are many amenities, from the camping to a bar. Kalami is a beach surrounded by greenery and crystal clear waters. Then there is Naftilos which has no sand, but white pebbles, a tavern and area for camping.
