Skopelos is a perfect blend of tranquillity, nightlife and nature. The island is located between the better-known islands of Skiathos and Alonissos and like the rest of the Sporades is covered with vineyards and orchards. The inhabitants of the island mostly live off agriculture and fishing during the winter and tourism during the summer. Skopelos is very well organized and equipped for both families and young people looking for good nightlife.
History
The name Skopelos means 'rocky' in Greek. The island has always been the subject of invasions since ancient times, beginning with the Cretans, Athenians, Spartans, Macedonians and Romans. Then there were the Byzantines, Venetians and the Turkish pirates, unfortunately, the population had to flee to safer shores in some cases. There are still pirate tombs on the island that recall the invasions and violence of the past. The island is a real jewel and the Chora is composed of small streets and white houses built on top of each other with flowers and balconies reminiscent of authentic Greece, before the days of international tourism. The island has many churches and monasteries built by fishermen and sailors and some ruins of a city that dates back to 500 BC, located in the bay of Panormos.
Beaches
Skopelos is famous for its pine forests, vineyards, almond trees and orchards, plums in particular are grown in in large quantities to be exported throughout Greece. But the coastline and beaches on Skopelos are among the most beautiful in Greece and Stafilos is one of the most famous, characterized by very clear turquoise water, with pebbles and sand. Valanio is equally as beautiful and is wilder, although it had fewer amenities, while Glifoneri is recommended for lovers of fine sand and crystal clear sea.
