Guide of Bar

Bar is a port city on the Montenegrin Adriatic coast, Bar or Antibari owes its name to the Italian city of Bari, located directly on the opposite coast.

Historical sites

Bar is a very old city as proven by archaeological findings dating back to the Neolithic period. In fact, during the Barbarian invasions Bar became a refuge for Latin refugees, who spread customs and language. Around IX, the city was annexed to the reign of Doclea and at the end of 1100 it became governed by the Byzantines. Subsequently, it was dominated by Venice during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, then in 1571 the city was conquered by the Ottomans. It was only in 1878 that Bar became part of the Principality of Montenegro.

Places to visit

The Cathedral of Bar is dedicated to San Jovan Vladimir and there is a lot of Balkan architecture to explore in the city. There is a white façade, with small splashes of blue glass windows, with gold domes and the two towers. The majesty of this building can also be felt inside, where you can discover the stories of the saints. Do not miss the village of Bar, the ancient walls and the Roman aqueduct. The village Mali Mikulići is a nice place to visit, you can get a breathtaking view from about 800 meters above sea level overlooking the Adriatic and the lake of Scutari.

Beaches

Bar offers twenty sandy and rocky beaches, some pristine and wild, others very lively and busy. The Veliki Pijesak beach is not very long but wide is in a bay close to the city but in summer it is very crowded. Another famous beach is Sutumore, a few kilometres from Bar, which can also get very crowded, but the crystal clear waters are worth it.
