The port of Alexandroupolis is located on the Thrace region of the Aegean Sea. It is an important point for trade between Mediterranean, the Balkans and Asia. The port is a nerve center for cargo ships and passenger ferries and fishing boats. The port was built in 1800 by the French and the Ottoman Empire. The lighthouse is the symbol of the city and distinguishes this port, it has stood there since 1880 and has 27 floors and its light can be seen around 35 kilometers away. The port is located in the east of the city, about six kilometers from Democritus International Airport. The airport and city centre are connected by private shuttles, taxis and Ktel buses. The port of Alexandroupoli is also around 320 kilometers from Thessaloniki International Airport.
To reach the port by car, take the E90 Egnatia Odos. You can get from the airport to the city center in about 45 minutes and from the city centre you can take a Ktel bus or rent a car right in front of the bus station arrivals terminal.
