The walled city of Saint-Malo had a long history of piracy; the city earnt a lot of its wealth from local extortion and overseas adventures. In 1944 during the Second World War, the Allies heavily bombed Saint-Malo, which was garrisoned by German troops. Since then, the city has become a popular tourist centre, with a ferry terminal serving Portsmouth, Jersey, Guernsey and Poole.
Getting to and from Saint-Malo
Travelling by car the N137 is a dual carriageway without tolls, that connects St Malo with the rest of France when you are nearby just following signs for the Terminal Ferry du Naye.
There are also taxis available outside the terminal a ride to the town centre will cost approximately €8 (or €10 after 7 pm or on Sundays and public holidays). A company called Keolis can transport people with limited mobility and wheelchairs.
The train station is in the Square Jean Coquelin, a 25-minute walk from the terminal. Taxis from here to the port cost approximately €8.50 (or €12.50 after 7 pm or on Sundays and public holidays). There is also a bus stop about 3 minutes walk from the terminal, next to the La piscine du Naye swimming pool. The 'Coeurs de Ville' shuttle Buses to the town centre and the train station leave every 20 minutes and costs around €1.30 per person. Visit the Keolis Saint-Malo website for more information. It is approximately a 10-minute walk to the town centre or coach station and a 25-minute walk to the train station.
The nearest international airport is Dinard–Pleurtuit–Saint-Malo, about 12.2 km away. There are Line 70 buses from the airport to the port leaving regularly, and there are also taxis.
